This book is the first installment of a larger series (which I’ve read over four books) that is well worth the time. There are two primary elements to this series that make it worth the read.
First, the RPG aspects are interesting, well thought out and fun. The power gains are slow and steady and lead to really satisfying conclusions in terms of seeing the protagonist triumph over obstacles in interesting and innovative ways. Second, in between battles and leveling up, the slice of life sections of the story keep you interested in the characters and do an excellent job making you care about the various creatures that inhabit the Wandering Inn.
